The Sandra Collins Story

Many of us have heard the Marva Collins Story about the Chicago outstanding educator that took children that had been written off and turned them into scholars . Another lady with the same last name , Sandra Collins , also took lemons and turned them into lemonade . I have had the privilege of working vvith Sandra for the past year and in this article I will share with you her stmy that she has shared as encouragement to all who will hear .
Collins and I met at one of her domestic violence events more than a year ago . I had heard of her and what had happened to her in my home town of Quincy , Florida and I was so impressed vvith the fact that she was able to bring her off ender to justice . I did not know the full stmy until she told it at this event . Sandra smvived both domestic and sexual violence that started at an early age .
Secretly married at 18 , Sandra became a military wife and had no idea how to be one . So her yom1g husband decided to use his ovvn means to teach her how to please him . Forced to watch adult movies to " learn " how to please him , she was controlled by him . Her husband used food to control her . She was able to get a job as a waitress at Red Lobster and would go to a local store to get food to feed her husband and she was not allowed to eat until he ate all that he wanted .

This went on for a while before it was noticed by her employer and the local store owner that something was vvrong . Eventually the milita1y dismissed her husband because of the domestic violence . But it did not end there . Only when she had taken all that she could take , she doused him with hot chicken noodle soup and she left with one toddler daughter and pregnant with her second .
She would later find love again and again with someone who caused her to end up being placed in the Gadsden County jail where she was raped by the jailer . She again felt violated and when released she sought legal recourse and with the help of former GovernorJeb Bush and other legislators , she was able to successfully lobby a bill that makes it illegal and punishable with jail time for jailers to sexually assault inmates .
The Domestic Violence Advocate , Sandra Collins , truly has a stmy to tell and she continues to add to it the many women who are encouraged by her ability to survive these ordeals . She attributes her belief in God and the ministry that he has entrusted her with to her ability to survive .
