He was a community organizer , civil-rights lawyer and teacher before pursuing a political career . He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996 and to the U . S . Senate in 2004 . He was elected to the U . S . presidency in 2008 , and won re-election in 2012 against Republican challenger Mitt Romney .

Dr . Joye Carter is a board certified forensic pathologist and the Chief Forensic Pathologist . She was the first African American to be appointed as a Chief Medical Examiner in the United States of America and is the first female Chief Medical Examiner in the District of Columbia , Houston , Texas . She was also the first female and minority forensic pathologist to hold the position in Indianapolis , Indian . Her mantra is “ Never Give Up ” and she seems to live up to her beliefs .
Dr . Carter is often asked what ’ s it like to be the first Black female Chief Medical Examiner . She is in charge of the entire operation , a very big , frightening responsibility . She works with death , and that ’ s a topic most people don ’ t want to address . As the Chief Medical Examiner , she is responsible for the good , the bad , and the ugly that happens in her office on a daily basis . So how does it feel to be the First Black Female Medical Examiner ? “ To sum it up it feel great , because I know I won ’ t be the last .”

Dr . Carter started Biblical Dogs Inc . in 2002 as a Christian publishing and consulting firm . She has traveled all over the world to help those in need . Her company motto is “ Ethical solutions for today ’ s forensic problems .” Dr . Carter self-published her first book as a mentoring tool and autobiography titled , “ My Strength Comes from Within ”. The book is a must have for anyone facing self-doubt about any career choice and has been used as a text for developing self-esteem in young people .
Her second book is titled “ I Speak for the Dead ” and is used as a great source of information for those experiencing grief and dealing with the ethical consideration of death and dying . For Dr . Carter , spirituality and death investigation go hand and hand .

On January 12 , 2016 , Barack Obama delivered his final State of the Union address . His message for the American people was centered around themes of optimism in the face of adversity , asking them not to let fears about security or the future get in the way of building a nation that is “ clear-eyed ” and “ big-hearted .” Obama also took the opportunity to tout his accomplishments , citing the Affordable Care Act , diplomatic progress with Iran and Cuba , the legalization of gay marriage and profound economic recovery as among them .
