B-CU Students Donates Thousands To Underprivileged Students In Africa

The Freshman Class of 2016 at Bethune-Cookman University is doing its part in fulfilling Dr . Bethune ’ s legacy . As common readers , the students read autobiographies about Dr . Mary McLeod Bethune and Frederick Douglass , and revisited some of the obstacles that these African American pioneers endured , that beset our people still today . The correlation of issues then and now , such as discrimination , generational stereotypes , intimidation , abuse , and a need for education sparked much needed conversations amongst our privileged generation where access to a college education is obtainable .
With their newfound commitment to knowledge , B-CU students embarked on their service learning activity of collecting books for underprivileged students . The entire Fall Semester , freshmen student asked donors to clear their shelves of any unused book . Their peers donated textbooks instead of reselling them , their professors brought in texts from their personal libraries , children emptied their toy chests , and local libraries and schools cleared their shelves in support of this initiative .

The books were donated to the Books for Africa campaign , which ships the books to African schools that have identified their need for materials . Housed in Atlanta , the Books for Africa warehouse operates with the help of the endless volunteers who come in daily to sort books and complete orders . After sorted , boxed , and placed in shipyard crates , the books set sail on a four month trek across sea . Being at an institution where the motto is , “ Enter to Learn , Depart to Serve ,” and where its founder Dr . Bethune was a servant leader , the students of Bethune-Cookman will always strive to uphold their rich legacy . With the lingering satisfaction of seeing the impact of their service , this is just the beginning of a life-long commitment . Having donated over 3,000 books … B-CU Serves !
