WELLNESS

The goal of the Wellness Department is to support the health of all students by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to make good decisions about lifelong health and fitness . Students must complete two one-half credit core classes and an activity half-credit .

REQUIRED COURSES

Principles of Personal Fitness

0.5 Credit • Grade 9
This required course will introduce students to personal fitness through a combination of activity labs and class discussions . Upon completion of the course , students will understand the Physical Activity Pyramid to plan their own fitness for life programs . Students will learn about the FIT principle and how it applies to moderate physical activity , vigorous aerobics , vigorous sport and recreation , muscle fitness , and flexibility . Students will also be introduced to nutrition concepts .

Current Issues in Wellness

0.5 Credit • Grades 10 & 11 Prerequisite : Principles of Personal Fitness
This required course emphasizes decision making related to topics of stress , sexuaility , drugs , alcohol , and tobacco . Students will expand their understanding and appreciation of information learned in the Principles course , as well as explore current trends and issues in wellness in our society .

ACTIVITY CREDIT

0.5 Credit Activity credits may be completed through any of the following three options . Students should consider each option carefully and select the one that best matches their personal interests and activities .
Option 1 : Successfully complete one of the three activity classes listed in this section .
Option 2 : Successfully complete Dance I .
Option 3 : Complete two interscholastic athletic seasons in good standing .
The required activity credit will be awarded following verification of two completed seasons of interscholastic athletic participation . Students should note that this option must be completed by the end of junior year .
