It ’ s fitting that , like the venue they were upgrading , the collaborators behind The Aeolian project embody the idea and importance of community – both that of their city and its tight-knit live production scene .
“ When I first started working with Ron [ Schroeyens ] and The PA Shop , [ his sons ] Ryan and Kyle were still in school . I sort of watched them grow into the industry and apply themselves and become major movers and shakers ,” Babin shares . “ It ’ s not hard working with people who are smart and have a good moral compass . That speaks volumes , so trusting them to do right by our venue was not an issue .”
Ryan Schroeyens returns the praise : “ Christoph is a legend . There are thousands of audio pros out there that know him and have learned from him . When I was a kid , he taught me something . He said , ‘ Ryan , where there ’ s a will , there ’ s a way , and where there ’ s a way , there ’ s Chris .’ I was eight or something and I never forgot that , and in my own life , I ’ ve stolen that quote and replaced his name with mine . It ’ s people like Chris that have helped to shape and drive passion into people doing sound all over the world , and I don ’ t know if he realizes how many people he ’ s touched between OIART , The Aeolian , or wherever it might be .”
Thanks to their collective work , engaging patrons and performers at The Aeolian will be far more efficient and effective . As McCann emphasizes , “ It sounds so great in that room , and this new system only highlights that . Even the demo sounded unbelievable , so to surpass that with everything installed and tuned is icing on the cake . That rich midrange and vocal clarity and separation from Adamson are just unreal and really set the venue apart .”
But for Babin , the acoustics are just one of many things that keep him anchored at The Aeolian . “ It ’ s the people you meet from when you walk into the room ‘ til the end of the night ; everybody is there for the right reasons ,” he says . “ We want people to walk out at the end of the night saying , ‘ That was it .’ That ’ s what everyone strives for . It ’ s a high bar set by Clark [ Bryan ] that we ’ re able to achieve .
“ It ’ s terrible not being able to do that through COVID – that we have all this new gear and want people to experience it , but that will come . We ’ re very optimistic and taking steps to make that happen safely and responsibly so that when it ’ s time to go , we ’ re ready .”
