Suspicious Fire Further Wrecks
Quebec’s Legendary ‘Le Studio’
The legendary but long-closed recording facility Le Studio in
Morin Heights, QC was the site of a suspicious fire in the early
morning hours of Aug. 11, 2017. The studio – which in its heyday
hosted clients like Rush, David Bowie, and The Police – had been
closed and unused since 2008 and had fallen into disrepair. The
fire department believes the fire was purposely set and an investi-
gation is taking place.
After learning of the fire, Rush’s Geddy Lee wrote on the
band’s website, “[Le Studio] was not only a place where we did
some of our best work, but we also experienced many profound
personal moments there. To say nothing of the friendships that
were forged there that still endure today. Le Studio played a key
role in our album recording experience at a pivotal point in our
career. We were already saddened to lea rn of its derelict state a
few years ago, but upon hearing that it has now been destroyed
by fire, it truly marks the end of an age for the three of us.”
SSL Demo Truck Makes Several
Canadian Stops
The Solid State Logic AWS Truck made three stops in Quebec and
four in Ontario as part of its 2017 trip through North America. Ar-
riving first in Quebec, the truck was at Montreal’s Studio Economik
for two days, and then a day each at CBC/Radio-Canada and CEV. In
Ontario, the truck hit Long & McQuade Bloor and Long & McQuade
Pro in Toronto as well as Mississauga’s Metalworks Institute and
London’s Fanshawe College.
The SSL AWS Truck is a custom-built mobile demonstration studio
featuring two music production systems: one based around SSL’s
AWS 948 hybrid studio production console and a collection of SSL
I/O. The second system is based around Nucleus2, with a particular
emphasis on its use in Dante-based multi-seat teaching labs. The
truck’s internal acoustics were designed by Russ Berger. Visitors at
each stop could tour the truck and get hands-on with the gear.
The stops were arranged with the help of SSL’s Canadian dis-
tributor, HHB Canada. The truck is now touring the east coast of the U.S.
