As it happens, Murray actually began
his professional career as Brodbeck’s assistant
after graduating from OIART in 2004. “So it’s
full circle for me,” Murray says with a chuckle,
speaking to Professional Sound from the Char-
terhouse control room. “Dan was my mentor,
and I’m now based in the space that he built
with his dad, which is a cool thing for me.”
At the time, the building housed all of
The PA Shop’s various departments, but in
2015, when Kyle and Ron moved the PA Shop
Pro – Live Event Production offices and ware-
house to a new location, Ryan, who had been
overseeing the rest of the building to that
point, took over Charterhouse Studios. “When
they moved, it didn’t make sense for Kyle to
continue to run the studio, so I decided to
take that on as part of my duty of running the
facility,” Ryan explains.
Going forward, he wanted to ensure the
studio remained viable while rounding out
its list of services and enhancing the overall
Over time, 46 Charterhouse has served
a variety of purposes. Initially, Ron Schroeyens
used the space as a shop for building lighting
control systems, loudspeakers, and road cases.
In 1990, Juno Award-winning engineer Dan
Brodbeck, along with his late father, Rick,
and Emmy-winning composer Trevor Morris,
opened dB Studios there, which inhabited the
building until 2000. When Brodbeck moved
on, Ron renovated the space and he and his
other son, Kyle, opened Waterline Studios.
“After Dan left, my father took it over and
put some equipment in there,” explains Ryan
Schroeyens, “and Kyle gravitated to it because
my father needed a hand setting up the dig-
ital studio.”
In 2009, when Kyle brought in engineer
and producer Andre Doucette, the studio
began operating under the Charterhouse
brand. Following his departure in 2012, engi-
neer Aaron Murray came into the picture as
head engineer.

experience clients got at Charterhouse. “I had
initial meetings with Aaron, and we decided
on a clear path and have been developing
and adding to that ever since. Other things
we’ve taken on, like London Guitars, have
helped with that, too.”
Schroeyens’ evolving vision for the stu-
dio, the building, and his overall approach to
business is largely driven by his background
in music, lighting, and audio.
His father opened The PA Shop in 1980
and grew the company to the point that it
became a go-to supplier of audio, lighting,
and video equipment for concerts and corpo-
rate events in London.
“I started working in the company
around 1988 on the manufacturing side,”
Ryan recalls. “In 1993 or 1994, I started doing
lighting for the production company, and got
into the sales side in 1997. But, originally, I was
working with my dad, learning how to wrap
cables at Victoria Park in London where bands
like Glass Tiger and Lee Aaron played.”
Being relatively well versed in produc-
tion technologies, Ryan took up DJing while
still in elementary school. He went on to work
as a DJ in Toronto, London, and elsewhere,
but fondly remembers one of his earliest gigs:
“I was 12 and my dad got me up out of bed
one night and said, ‘Grab some of your CDs
and come with me.’ We drove for a while, but
he wouldn’t tell me where we were going. We
got to Western University and there was a big
tent on top of UC Hill with a bunch of lights
flashing, and he said, ‘Okay, the DJ from To-
ronto didn’t show up. A DJ has been up there
for two and a half hours playing retro and
alternative, but I need you to go up there and
