SOUNDPROOF INSULATION
Teofilo : The recording studio has required well over 200 bags of insulation . This is to create density within the walls to reduce sound transfer . In this photo , you can see the 16 gauge steel frame on 12 ” centers being filled with insulation . The outer concrete walls do not require any insulation , but the walls on the right side of the photo will require insulation on both the recording studio side as well as the outer shell side . The ceiling also is filled with insulation .
LIVE ROOM
CONTROL ROOM
Teofilo : This is a view from the rear of the control room . In the centre of this photo you can see two large MDF boxes on either side of the middle opening . These will house the two ATC SCM150 monitors . The steel framing you see on either side of the room are the bulkheads that act as large cavities for the sends of the HVAC system . There is no ductwork that drops into the room for sound purposes . The black lining is a duct liner and this is also used to reduce noise . The bulkheads will also be filled with insulation between the studs and then will be covered with two layers of 5 / 8-in . drywall .
The MDF boxes you see the pot lights sitting in are used to reduce noise . They do so by allowing a much smaller hole to penetrate the ceiling layer for the wiring instead of a large hole being cut out for a pot light . Every electrical outlet , pot light , and audio / data receptacle requires its own box for the same reason .
Teofilo : This viewpoint is from the rear of the live room staring back into the control room . You can see a couple of the layers of the walls and ceiling . The first layer of wall is 5 / 8-in . drywall with a second layer of 3 / 4-in . MDF . There is an additional layer of 5 / 8-in . drywall that is on top of the MDF . The ceiling is also three layers with 3 / 4-in . plywood being in the middle layer instead of MDF . The opening to the control room will have two layers of glass . One layer will be 3 / 4-in . thick and the other will be 1-in . thick with a 24-in . gap in between .
