ON CONVERSATIONS WITH WOMEN IN MUSIC PRODUCTION
KALLIE MARIE
BY MICHAEL RAINE

Afew years ago , New York-based producer and recording engineer Kallie Marie was asked to contribute a chapter to a book called Music Production ( Rutledge Taylor Francis Group ). After initially wanting to write about the democratization of recording technology , she was asked to also write about women in music production . Determined to do justice to such an important and broad topic , Marie cast her net wide , interviewing many accomplished women in the field with a diverse range of backgrounds and life experiences . Near the end of that process in 2019 , looking at all the interviews and valuable insights she ’ d amassed , Marie recalls her editors telling her , “ You have a book here .”

Now , a couple years later , Marie has compiled her interviews and research into an illuminating new book , Conversations with Women in Music Production : The Interviews . In it , she speaks to a wide array of acclaimed female producers / engineers who span countries , races , and ages , including Sylvia Massy , Kerry Pompeo , Andrea Yankovsky , Ebonie Smith , Hillary Johnson , Abhita Austin , and more . They discuss the overt and subtle obstacles that prevent women from entering the recording industry and advancing , as well as having children , preconceptions and stereotypes , mentorship , studio hierarchies , gatekeepers and tastemakers in the music industry , and a lot more .
With that , Professional Sound spoke with Marie about the lessons she took from these conversations . Marie herself has worked with artists such as Jeff Derringer , ( e ) motion Picture , Ashley Hicklin , Royst , January Jane , RainMKERS , Makes My Blood Dance , and Mary and the Ram . Additionally , she produces and creates music under her own
