$ 17M FUNDING TO RESHAPE MUSIC RESEARCH IN MONTREAL
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology ( CIRMMT ), the Schulich School of Music of McGill University , and the Faculty of Music of l ’ Université de Montréal have received a significant investment of public and private support that the institutions say will redefine the future of music and audio research in Canada by transforming the way musicians compose , listen to , and perform music . They are creating an interconnected research hub that will link two spaces at two of Canada ’ s most renowned music schools .
The combination of public and private gifts will broaden the schools ’ musical research capabilities . The Montreal facilities have received over $ 14.5 million in grants from the Canada Foundation for Innovation ( CFI ), the Government of Quebec , and the Fonds de Recherche du Québec ( FRQ ), and an additional $ 2.5 million gift from private philanthropy .
Digital channels coupling McGill University ’ s Music Multimedia Room ( a large , sound-isolated performance lab ) and l ’ Université de Montréal ’ s Salle Claude Champagne ( a concert hall ) will transform these two spaces into leading research facilities for the scientific study of live performance , movement of recorded sound in space , and distributed performance , where musicians in different locations perform together .
