agriculture. Commercially grown crops that meet the
high standards for organic production will give the
consumer confi dence in the methods used, have a less
intrusive environmental impact (i.e. less pollution of the
water and soil), and will produce higher quality prod-
ucts with better taste, aroma, and potency. Although the
cost for commercial organic farming is higher upfront,
over time, as the soil is built up year after year, the
overall cost becomes less when compared with conven-
tional agriculture.

Simply put, with organic horticulture the soil can be
used time and time again, while conventional agricul-
ture can lead to a dead soil that requires relocation or
even more fertilization. Organic products are important
to consumers and businesses as well, as they make up
one of the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. economy,
grossing over $50 billion in 2018 between produce
and organic commodities. On average, farms utilizing
organic methods and growing organic produce are
35% more profi table than traditional farms utilizing
conventional fertilizers. The combination of consum-
er confi dence in organic products and sustainable,
environmentally benefi cial agriculture is a message that
resonates with customers and gives them more reasons
to purchase your product, or in this case, cannabis.
Organic Certifi cations
While there are no offi cial certifi cations for cannabis
growers, there are organizations and certifi cations to
help them identify which products meet the rigid stan-
dards to be considered truly “organic”. The standards
for organic crop production are set by the National
Organic Program (NOP).
