GLP Hits Quarter-Century Mark German Light Products (GLP) is celebrating its 25 th anniversary in 2019. “It has been quite a journey since our humble beginnings in a corner of a warehouse, and to be celebrating 25 years was special for us,” said GLP founder Udo Künzler following the company’s anniversary party at Prolight + Sound. Künzler founded the Karlsbad, Germany-based com- pany in 1994 and it has since gone on to become a leading manufactur- er of lighting technology equipment within the entertainment sector. Künzler originally worked as an electronics technician for the engi- neering conglomerate Siemens when he became interested in the work of his uncle, Hartmut Braun, whose company, B&K Showelectronic, was a gear supplier for nightclubs. Künzler began working for B&K and would soon lead its technical department. Using his electronics engineering background, he increased his knowledge of lighting equipment by modi- fying fixtures to fit specific purposes and installing them at nightclubs. Flash forward and GLP’s X4 series has become a standard around the world, specified by many top LDs. In 2009, GLP purchased the German video company G-LEC and increased its global presence by establishing a subsidiary in Los Angeles, CA, and in Hong Kong the following year. Entering the current decade, GLP continued to expand its horizons by setting up a new Nordic office, based in Sweden. Eaton to Spin Off Lighting Business into Separate Company Eaton has announced its intent to spin-off of its lighting business, creating an independent, publicly-traded company. A transaction is ex- pected to be completed by the end of this year. Included in the spin-off of Eaton’s lighting business are U.K. brands Zero 88, iLight, and Greengate, which are part of the Eaton Lighting Division, plus its global airport lighting business and mains lighting and intrusion systems operations that operate primarily in Europe and the Middle East. The Crouse-Hinds Industrial Lighting business and Life Safety Division’s emergency lighting product lines in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa will remain with Eaton. The Lighting business had sales of $1.7 billion in 2018 and employs over 5,000 people, so it will be one of the largest global lighting businesses, according to the company. Over the next few months, Eaton will be working to finalize the spin-off and ensure a smooth transition for employees, customers, and business partners.
