Introduction
My project brief is to create a Workshop Theatre to breach the generational divide within Portsmouth,
more specifically The Sallyport Building (57/58 High Street). It is very rare in life where you
see multiple generations in the same room all interested in the same thing, however theatre and
performance manage this due to their ageless and timeless presence.
The idea behind the Workshop Theatre is that in the day people of all ages can visit and help create
scenery, props and costumes as well as rehearse. At night the building becomes a theatre, where
people who were at the site during the day can witness their creations on stage, as well the rest of the
community, who can just visit to enjoy a show, eat in the restaurant and bar or even perform.
The theatre space will be capable of shows ranging from variety, such as singing, dancing, comedy to
full on productions with sets, props and costumes.
The design intention is to depict stories of Old Portsmouth and the Sallyport Building within the
details, such as wallcoverings and tiling, creating perfromance and narrative throughout the interior.
