Erste Hilfe: VDMA Leitfaden für den Produkt-
und Know-how-Schutz
Trotz hoher Schadenspotentiale und einer stetig
wachsenden Bedrohung durch Produktpiraterie
und Know-how-Abfluss werden Technologien
und Schutzmaßnahmen zur Prävention nur
unzureichend genutzt. Es fehlt an Transparenz
hinsichtlich Wirtschaftlichkeit, Beschaffungs-

First aid: the VDMA‘s product and know-how
protection guideline
Despite high damage potentials and an ever-in-
creasing threat by product piracy and know-how
tapping, preventive technologies and precautions
are made insufficient use of. There is too little
communication about economic efficiency, costs
of procurement and process integration options.
Companies that particularly depend on prevention
and precautions often believe they are too compli-
cated for implementation. It is difficult to accu-
rately pin down the value added by solutions and
concepts of prevention against product piracy and
know-how tapping. Specific benefits often remain
incalculable until their practical application and
reference to one‘s own situation reveals them.
Securing the sustainability of one‘s own company
requires the persons involved to know the offend-
ers‘ interests, approaches and resources – in order
to recognise the actual threat and derive the spe-
cific risks from it. WHAT I do and, even more so,
HOW it is done is crucially important to minimis-
ing or even excluding such risks.
Our „Product and Know-how Protection“ guideline
is intended to help you choose the appropriate
precautions against product piracy and know-how
tapping by modelling a structured workflow in
order to carve out the requirements and actions
applicable to a company‘s key areas that deserve
organisational protection. The guideline lists a set
of general recommendations which are construed
as a first source of information about how best to
apply the precautions you need. Its target group
includes all manufacturing companies, their
suppliers and customers who wish to introduce
measures against product piracy and know-how
tapping. It was written for use by directors, process
owners, technical engineers, and users alike.
