Government Girls Secondary School is the only all girls secondary school in Bonny Island. The school was established over four decades ago and has seen many excellent women pass through its gate. There are more than 3,000 students within the walls of the school which is made up of the junior and senior secondary schools. However, our present focus is on the senior secondary school.
The School is managed by a dedicated and dexterous principal whose administrative skills and efficiency can not be overemphasized. He is assisted by an indefatigable team of teachers, who carry out their duties as an assignment and not a mere job. This team of teachers are concerned about the general well being of the students, therefore, they drive the students to pursue a life of stellar quality. They are constantly motivating, inspiring and educating. While they work hard to ensure that students are academically equipped they also insist vehemently on students’ discipline.
Besides the teaching and learning process, the school also has many extracurricular activities which helps the students in their journey of self discovery, some of those activities are the ICT training organized in conjunction with Cedars Pro Hub, intra school competitions in cultural and cooking activities and sports activities where young talents are discovered in the areas of athletics, volleyball, table tennis and football. Other extra activities include students' membership in various clubs such as the drama, music, dance, interact, press, Red Cross and the art and craft clubs. These clubs are very functional and they enhance exploration and discovery of potential talents in the students.
It is not surprising that the school has bagged many awards. In the last Adata Bristol Foundation public Speaking and Essay competition a student of this school won the second position in the Public Speaking category and another student of ours came first position in the essay writing category. This year, the wife of the Executive Governor of Rivers State the honourable Justice Suzette Eberechi Nyesom Wike under auspices of RivEthics and Suzette Family First Foundation bestowed on the school the award of excellence for emerging in the 1st and 3rd position at the Statewide All Girls Essay writing competition.
The school has a winning streak. We have also won many awards from the competitions organized by the Youth Resource Center. It is worthy to note that Government Girls Is Secondary School was the first school among many other schools on the Island to emerge the overall winner of the very first Edition of the Youth Festival Of Life Celebration in the year 2017.
In the school it is declared "we are the best". The girls here are winners, champions by all standards. The teachers have inspired the girls to be pacesetters. We also applaud the Old girls association who are actively present to perform positive role model duties to the students.
