The Erudite Clan

A club of teenagers passionate about poetry and ready to explore their world through the art of spoken word poetry

The Erudite Clan is the poetry arm of the Centre. It is the club where words are woven by youths and teens interested in creative writings and story telling. The club started in 2014 with 4 people and currently has 50 youths registered. They had their first performance at the 2014 Spelling Bee Competition and now feature in nearly every event organized by the Centre.

The club was born out of a desire to imbibe a certain level of confidence and expressiveness in our youths through poems. Spoken word poetry which is a word based oral art that focuses on the aesthetics of word play such as intonation and voice inflection. Because of its diverse nature, the members collaborate with the PlayHouse team (the drama club) to produce powerful and life changing mimes, stories and comedic skits.

The clan meets every Wednesday by 3pm at the Centre and to engage in critical discussions about societal problems and postulate possible solutions to eradicate such problems through their art. With the help of the club, the members have developed their creative writing skills, stage performance, built a good sense of self esteem, critical thinking and problem solving skills. They have also been able to build a good team spirit to help foster their art together. We have seen such a high level of dedication to their craft such that our ambassadors continue to do poetry in their tertiary institutions with more zest and passion. We are very confident that great poetic giants in the near future will have their roots from the Erudite clan of the Youth Resource Center.
