cial Realist Painting , draws the face of a woman overcome by grief . The only thing that the artist wants us to know about the woman is her pain , not her name or identity and not even her personal story , one can only feel empathy for her in her loss ( Ibid ).

The work of Palestinian artist Jafra Abu Zoulouf , “ Olive Grove ” ( Figure 4 ), relates to the mutual symbol , for both Israeli and Palestinian identities , of the olive tree . For the Israelis it is a symbol of the miracles and promises connected to the idyllic Promised Land . For the Palestinians it is an allegory of their identity , related to the land they used to work and grow and the symbolic figure of the Fallah ( the peasant ) who used to take care of the olive trees ( Ankori 2006 , 156-158 ; Swedenburg 1990 ). The artist shows in her work a small almost malformed olive tree , pulled from the ground with its exposed roots . It a symbol and a metaphor of displacement and the attempt to grow and build a life after your nature had been eradicated .
