Picture Abi Baaki Hai Mere Dost the imagination of the nation . Awaara became a big hit internationally . In Russia even today India is known because of Raj Kapoor . The film was dubbed in Russian and remade in Turkish . Awaara was written by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas with Dilip Kumar in mind but as luck would have it , it was Raj Kapoor who made it famous . RK approached his father Prithviraj Kapoor to play the role of the father of the protagonist Raju , Prithviraj reacted “ I don ’ t play father roles ”, however finally succumbed to his son ’ s persistence . Shashi Kapoor , Raj Kapoor ’ s younger brother played the young Raju in Awaara and received a remuneration .
Do Bigha Zameen ( 1953 ): Do Bigha Zameen inspired by Tagore ’ s poem Dui Bigha Jomeen was directed by Bimal Roy . The story is of a farmer who is in tricked of his land by a money lender and is pushed to go to the city of Kolkata to earn a livelihood . The hardship he faces is the storyline of this film . treatment of the film draws inspiration from Vittorio De Sica ’ s Italian film Bicycle Thief . The film went on to win the best director and the best film at the inaugural filmfare awards in 1954 . At the filmfare award ceremony unkown Bimal Roy , a Kolkata Bhodrolok , went up to receive an award for the film dressed in dhoti and kurta , the Mumbai glitterati was rather affronted , they had probably expected a tuxedo . Beast of Burden‐ Balraj Sahni as rickshaw puller on the streets of Calcutta in the film Do Bigha Zameen
Zameen . This silenced the industry . To prepare for the role Balraj Sahni , a BBC London radio announcer , stayed hungry for days to look like a rickshaw puller . He also practiced pulling rickshaw on the streets of Calcutta barefoot in preparation for the role . The film was also awarded the certificate of merit by the jury of the first National Film Award ( 1953 ); the film which pushed Do Bigha Zameen to second place was the Marathi film Shyamachi Aai .
Devdas ( 1955 ): “ Kaun kambakth hai jo bardasht karne ke liye peeta hai . Main toh peeta hoon , ki bas saans le sakoon ”, this unforgettable dialogue from the film Devdas delivered in the characteristic style of Dilip Kumar and scripted by Rajinder Singh Bedi is rated amongst the best dialogues in Hindi cinema . Devdas established Dilip Kumar as the “ tragedy king of Hindi cinema ”. Dilip Kumar who started his career as a dry fruit merchant was spotted by Devika Rani , the owner of Bombay Talkies . Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay ’ s novel Devdas has been adapted for the Hindi screen thrice with iconic actors playing the lead role – KC Saigal ( 1935 ), Dilip Kumar ( 1955 )
