Manthan( 1976) 5 lakh farmers in Gujarat contributed Rs. 2 each to fund a movie. They hired the best talent‐ Shyam Benegal as director, Vijay Tendulkar for screen play, Govind Nihalani as cinematographer and actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Anant Nag. The farmers wanted this team to make a film on their successful milk cooperative movement which they had initiated in their villages throughout Gujarat. This Gujarat movement went on to become the template for the nation and lead to the famous
Operation Flood
Programme and the
White Revolution, making India the largest milk producer in the world. This is the only instance that such a large collective has produced a feature film. Manthan relates to the story of group of young urban professionals headed by a veterinary doctor( Girish Karnad) which arrives at a poor village in order to help start milk cooperative. As they proceed, they come up against the private milk contractor and village caste prejudices. How these bottlenecks are removed to setup a successful milk cooperative comprises the storyline of the film. The film went on to win the National Film Award for the best feature film, best screen play and best female playback singer( for the song Mero Gaam Kathaparey whichh was later
