Director Guru Dutt was known as India ’ s Orson Wells . His other top notches are Pyaasa and Kagaz Ke Phool . Unfortunately in 1964 then aged 39 , Guru Dutt committed suicide .

Narayanan ’ s novel was the first movie to be simultaneously shot in Hindi and English. The plot is of Raju , a tourist guide , who falls in love with Rosy a woman trapped in a loveless marriage who to save her marriage had sacrificed her dancing career . Encouraged by Raju , Rosy walks out of her husband and becomes a big name in the arena of dance . Raju wastes himself in liquor and gambling and in a twist of fate dies as a reformed man trying to save a village from drought . The highlight of the movie is its music by SD Burman. The censor board was reluctant to pass the movie , because of its bold theme of extra marital affair . Indira Gandhi then Information and Broadcasting Minister saw the film herself at a special screening at Rashtrapati Bhawan and cleared the movie . When the movie ended Mrs Gandhi had only one comment , turning to Dev Anand she said “ Mr
Dev Anand you speak so fast ”, the film was cleared by the Minister
. Both Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman were discouragedd to take up the film because of its unconventional theme of extra marital affair . First choice for heroine was Vyajantimala
