THE YALE DUAL LOCK – AND WHY SMART MEANS MORE SECURE

Steve Hall, Yale’ s Technical Manager – ASSA ABLOY, Residential, on why smart home security is more, not less, secure
It used to be predicted that home security would be resistant to smart products, with UK homeowners reluctant to give up the traditional lock and key.
Today, the opposite is true. The UK’ s smart home market is on track to reach £ 5.9 billion by 2028 – an impressive rise of almost 79 % from 2023 – with smart security products making a significant contribution to this surge.
What’ s behind this shift? As smart technology has become an everyday part of our lives, we’ ve discovered that it doesn’ t replace traditional security know-how – it enhances it, offering new layers of convenience, control, and peace of mind.
Introducing the Yale Dual Lock Window Lock range
Our new Dual Lock Window Lock range – a next-generation window locking solution that combines superior mechanical strength, streamlined installation, and full smart home integration – is the perfect example of this.
Developed with fabricators, installers, and homeowners in mind, the Dual Lock Window Lock range delivers high-performance security with modern convenience.
Fully compatible with Yale SensCheck™ smart sensors, the Dual Lock Window Lock enables real-time monitoring through the Yale Smart Living Alarm App. Homeowners receive instant alerts if a window is left unlocked or is tampered with, integrating seamlessly into the Yale smart home ecosystem and providing reassurance wherever they are.
Designed for efficiency on the factory floor and on-site, the Dual Lock Window Lock range features minimal routing preparation, reducing installation time and complexity.
The bi-directional twin cam operation increases resistance to intruders by engaging locking points in opposite directions simultaneously, making it significantly harder to manipulate compared to traditional single-direction systems. Adjustable cams allow for precise compression adjustment, improving weather sealing and maintaining a consistent, secure fit over time.
Offering compatibility with PVC, aluminium, and timber window systems, the Dual Lock Window Lock range is available in:
• Three backsets: 20mm, 22mm, 26mm
• Three cam heights: 7.7mm, 9.0mm, 10.5mm
• Eleven standard lengths and nine low-handle-height lengths
• Croppable and extendable Shootbolt options covering sash sizes from 312mm to 1,572mm
• The upcoming Flush Fit variants will be specifically tailored for modern flush window systems, ensuring a clean, seamless aesthetic without compromising strength or security
The Dual Lock Twin Cam Espagnolette is available with a durable Quadcoat finish. Tested to BS EN 1670 Grade 5( 480 hours) and independently verified to withstand 1000 hours of neutral salt spray( NSS), it offers exceptional corrosion resistance and long-lasting performance, even in the harshest environments.
The highest standards
One of the crucial standards that smart home security products must meet is PAS24, which is needed to comply with building regulations. A minimum standard covering composite, hinged, sliding, and bi-folding doors, plus all opening windows, PAS24 consists of a set of tests designed to assess the security of doors and windows against attacks from opportunistic burglars.
BS6375-2 is another standard that sets performance requirements for the strength and operation of manually operated windows and doors. It tests for operating forces, mechanical strength, resistance to static torsion, racking, load-bearing capacity of safety devices, impact resistance, and resistance to continual opening and closing.
In addition, TS621:2018 is the recognised standard for smart locks by the British Standard Institute( BSI), and requires smart locks to meet stringent mechanical security requirements.
This is not to mention other standards that all smart home security products must comply with, whether Restriction of Hazardous Substances( RoHS) or relating to the Internet of Things( IoT) or GDPR.
The Dual Lock Window Lock has been rigorously tested to meet the requirements of PAS24:2022 and BS6375-2 withstanding 50,000 operational cycles, and is backed by a 10-year mechanical guarantee. All products in the range are Secured by Design accredited and are covered by the Yale Lifetime Security Guarantee, ensuring total confidence in durability and performance.
Embracing smart home technology does not mean sacrificing on security – it means enhancing it further. As the Dual Lock Window Lock range shows, smart locks provide the same outstanding benefits in terms of mechanical locking and corrosion-resistance – while adding to them in the form of smart connectivity that boosts a home’ s alertness to intruders.
