Police Investigation
Into Fire-Resistant
Glass ‘Fraud’
The Glass and Glazing Federation
(GGF) is supporting the recent
Police investigation following a
complaint about the specification
of some of the fire resistant
glass supplied by Glassworks
Ireland Ltd, a company based
in Hillview Industrial Estate,
Randalstown, County Antrim.
UNRIVALLED
SECURITY
It is alleged that
Glassworks Ireland
has supplied some
non-fire rated glass as
fire resistant, branding
the product as Pyroguard.
CGI who manufacture
Pyroguard products is a
GGF Member that manufactures recognised, approved
and certified fire-rated glass
or one of their registered
stockists.
‘ensure the product’s authenticity’
A Senior Police Officer
has urged customers to
check the legitimacy of
the product by contacting
Pyroguard/CGI, to ensure
the product’s authenticity
and, if found not to be
genuine, to report this to
the Police and Trading
Standards.
With its latest high-security window
lock, security hardware specialist
ERA claims a new benchmark
in strength and durability. Under
exhaustive tests, the Fortress
multi-point lock (MPL) has not only
outperformed all other window
locks but also proved to exceed
the increased force requirements
of door lock security standards.
Putting all of its security expertise behind the
design of Fortress, ERA,
part of Grouphomesafe,
made full use of the
company’s in-house
UKAS test house during
the research and development process.
In testing the lock to the
PAS 024:2012 standard,
ERA established that the
lock could withstand both
the 3kn force requirement
for windows and the 4.5kn
force requirement for doors.
In fact, the Fortress window
lock withstood almost double the force requirement
for doors. The key to this
outstanding performance
is the fact that the lock is
designed with a number of
bear grip locking points that
fully engage into the keeps
to even out attack loads applied along any significant
area of the sash.
While the Fortress MPL offers the ultimate in security
for the householder, its design also takes into account
the practical needs of the
fabricator and installer.

Reinventing The House Of The Future
BRE’s pioneering future-focused Integer
House, built 15 years
ago, has undergone an
extensive retrofit and
renamed The Smart
Home.
Through a joint BRE and
British Gas project, it has
been re-equipped with a host
of ultra energy-efficient features and functions, making it
super fit for the future.
Using cutting-edge technology, design and building
techniques, the innovative
retrofit has made the house
50% more energy efficient
and halved its carbon emissions, upgrading it from an
E to an A/B EPC rating.
The house has a newto-market solar thermal
system, and an integrated
PV array has been installed
into the conservatory
glazing to generate most of
the home’s energy requirements and shade clear glass
against excess heat.
Doors and windows
have been replaced with
the latest uPVC double
glazing incorporating
recycled uPVC. The very
latest Velux windows have
been installed, and the
front door showcases new
generation electronic lock-
ing, including a car style
remote key.
Kerry Pollard MP said
“Energy costs are at the
forefront of people’s
minds now and this issue
is moving right up the
political agenda. The Smart
Home initiative is a major
step forward in securing
renewable energy and a
most exciting development
for BRE.”
