WIN A HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARD
The British Safety Council’s International Safety
Awards are an internationally recognised accolade
for safety excellence. The Awards, in their 60th year in
2018, celebrate organisations that go the extra mile to
keep their workers and workplaces healthy and safe.
This year, for the first
time, any organisation can
enter its employees for the
Champion Awards – wheth-
er or not the business is
applying for an Internation-
al Safety Award.
Also for the first time,
organisations can apply for
two new awards which are
designed to recognise em-
ployee wellbeing initiatives
and occupational health and
safety innovations imple-
mented by organisations
across the world.
The awards opened for
applications on 3 October
to organisations of all sizes,
types and sectors – both
members of the British Safe-
ty Council and non-mem-
bers, in the UK and interna-
tionally.
The International Safety
Awards 2018 will recognise
and reward organisations
which have demonstrated a
true commitment to achiev-
ing high standards of health
and safety during the 2017
calendar year. Last year, 535
organisations from a wide
range of industries, coun-
tries and continents won an
International Safety Award.
New Awards
The Employee Wellbeing
Initiative Award will recog-
nise and reward organisa-
tions that have implemented
initiatives that promote and
demonstrate a proactive and
effective approach to im-
proving worker wellbeing.
The Health and Safety Inno-
vation Award will recognise
and reward organisations
that can demonstrate fresh
and innovative approach to
improving health and safety
at work.
Champion Awards
The British Safety Council
is again running two awards
to recognise individual
employees who have gone
beyond the call of duty to
help ensure the health and
safety of their colleagues.
The Health and Safety
Champion of the Year
Award – for non-health
and safety personnel aged
24 or over – and the Young
Health and Safety Champi-

PROPERTY RENOVATION HOTSPOTS
Barking and Dagenham have
been revealed as the top location for
an increase in renovation applica-
tions in the past two years (114%).
Looking at national planning ap-
plication statistics taken from Gov.
uk, the top ten property renovation
hotspots revealed by home service
marketplace Plentific.com include
several London commuter zones. In
fact, the top five areas are all with-
in commuting distance from the
capital city, with the majority being
north east boroughs. Barking and
Dagenham take the top spot, with
an impressive 114% increase in
property renovation applications.
Luton shows the second highest
increase of 59%, with Milton
Keynes in third with a 54% in-
crease, and Wokingham taking the
fourth spot with a 42% increase in
planning applications.
Just one area in the north of
England made the top ten renova-
tion hotspots list: Hull. At number
seven on the list, it saw a 40%
increase in planning applications
for renovations from 2015.
Further down is Poole on the
south coast. This area has proved
popular with homeowners, and
comes in eighth with an increase
of 36% in planning applications
in the past two years. Number
nine on the list is Bournemouth,
with a 34% increase since 2015.
With these two locations side by
side, this data shows a boom in
renovation projects in the south,
with Bournemouth carrying the
overspill from Poole.
On the other end of the table,
Islington showed a 28% decrease
in planning applications submit-
ted, the largest decrease for both
the London and National areas.
Tower Hamlets showed the second
largest decrease of 18%, again
for both London and National
statistics.
