Get up to speed:
Industry training
announced
Network VEKA has
teamed up with The
Vocational College to
establish the Network
VEKA Academy, offering
courses that provide
both practical work
experience and recognised qualifications for
workers in the fenestration industry.
Designed to address a
skills shortage in the wider
construction and building
industry, the Academy offers
Network VEKA members the
opportunity to ensure their
installers are suitably qualified, with the added bonus
of financial assistance from
generous subsidies secured
by Network VEKA and The
Vocational College.
Network VEKA MD, John
Ogilvie, explains: “We were
keen to establish a vocational training offering, for
the benefit of our members.
By ensuring their staff are
of the highest possible
standard, the Network’s
principles are perpetuated
and our position as the
industry’s leading installer
organisation is bolstered.
“Working alongside The
Vocational College, an
award-winning learning
provider with strong links
to the Glass Qualifications
Authority (GQA), we’ve
compiled an offering to suit
a range of circumstances.
“From 5-6 month Traineeships; introducing 16-24
year-olds to our industry
and organisation, through to
18-month Advanced Apprenticeships that offer experienced workers a valuable
Level 3 NVQ qualification,
Network VEKA Academy
courses are tailored to our
member companies’ needs.
“Transferable skills, such
as English, Maths, social and
interview techniques are developed alongside practical,
industry-focused elements
of study, with modules
on employer’s rights and
responsibilities completing a
comprehensive, well-rounded prospectus.”
Besides providing qualification incentives for installers who already work for
Network VEKA members,
the Academy also offers
the opportunity to advertise for suitable trainees,
free-of-charge, in appropriate media - the National
Apprentice Service (NAS),
for example.

“MAKE SURE YOUR
CONTRACT TERMS
ARE LEGAL!”
Last June, the Consumer Rights Directive was
implemented in the
UK via the Consumer
Contracts Regulations,
which meant that all
companies who deal
with consumers needed to change their
contract terms and conditions.
The GGF has learned of
cases where companies
have continued with their
existing contracts giving
a seven days cooling-off
period, however taking this
action is likely to result in
a consumer being entitled
to a very long 14 days cooling-off period from the date
of delivery, because the
company has not informed
them as to their rights under the Consumer Contracts
Regulations (CCRs). The
CCRs mean companies must
inform consumers of their
rights as to their cooling-off
period relative to the CCRs,
which can be zero days on
made-to-measure windows
made to the consumer’s
specific requirements and
personal choices.
This is a complicated subject that even many Trading
Standards Officers are
struggling to understand. To
help companies cope with
this legislation the GGF has
published revised Model
Terms and Conditions of
Contract, plus Guidance on
implementation of the EU
Consumer Rights Directive for both GGF Members (free of charge) and
non-members (£75). If you
