VAN MAN SIN BIN

WHAT NOT TO DO AS A NEW VAN DRIVER

Nervous new van drivers are being offered tips to stay safe and avoid falling into the ‘ white van man ’ cliché .
The motoring experts at LeaseVan . co . uk have given new van drivers key safety information – along with some habits to avoid .
Driving any vehicle for the first time can be a daunting experience , let alone getting behind the wheel of a large van .
Many aspects of operating a van are no more difficult than they would be a normal car , but there are a few things to note that differ , from height restrictions to various controls .
A spokesperson for LeaseVan . co . uk said : “ Vans are becoming a much more popular vehicle choice for work , especially because of the growing need for couriers in the current climate . “ We want to help people avoid the stereotype of being an angry ‘ white van man ’ driver because it is very old-fashioned and in most cases , simply not true .
“ Driving a larger vehicle means that you must travel slower than many others on the road and be more mindful of the things going on around you .
“ Whether you ’ re driving a van for the first time for work or fun , operating a large vehicle for the first time can take some adjustment . Being considerate and clear with other road users will make it a lot easier .”

HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS AND REMINDERS

1 . Licence
Before setting off in a van for the first time , find out which licence the driver needs hold . Most people will be allowed to drive several vehicles , but it depends on when the driving test was taken .
2 . Adjustments
Once comfortable with the seat height and mirrors , it is important to get to grips with the blind spots , controls and settings in a van because they differ from standard cars . Another thing to note is the height and width of the van to avoid collisions with stationary objects .
3 . Speed
Vans drivers also must abide by slightly slower speed limits on British roads . Even at just 30mph , in two seconds the distance travelled will be the same length as two double decker busses
. In built up areas the same speed rules apply , but on single carriageways the limit is 50mph and on dual carriageways it is 60mph . The good news is van drivers can still go the full 70mph on motorways . The risks that come with speeding are obvious , but those caught could also be landed with a fine of up to £ 2,500 and penalty points on your license .
4 . Indicators
Not indicating annoys drivers of any vehicle but in a van , you must be particularly vigilant to other people ’ s indications and your own . People will need as much warning as possible that you are about to manoeuvre , so they can allow space . Your blind spots might also be more severe than they would be in a smaller vehicle , so bear this in mind too .
5 . Parking
Road users can find vans a nuisance when parked inconsiderately . Before turning your engine off , contemplate if the parking space chosen allows access for pedestrians and other vehicles to pass . Parking large vans on smaller residential roads might annoy the neighbours , so it might be worth seeking somewhere with lots of space .
6 . Keeping calm
The best way to drive a van is calmly . Stress levels will be high for any driver behind the wheel of a new van , so don ’ t increase them by rushing around . Show road users that the van man stereotype isn ’ t true by being patient and courteous when driving . Not everyone will have the same view of the road and others might not be as confident when out and about .
