New Regulations Challenge the Industry
The right glazing holds the key to aluminium systems compliance
REAL Aluminium , the manufacturer of bi-folding doors , sliding doors , residential doors and casement windows is advising that selecting the right glazing is the key to ensuring an aluminium profile system can meet the new Building Regulations .
In the shift towards a Future Buildings Standard , the government has introduced a range of changes to the Building Regulations for England , including a mandatory 30 per cent cut in carbon for all new homes and a 27 per cent cut for other buildings , including offices and shops .
Changes to Part L and Part F of the Building Regulations in England - introduced on Wednesday 15th June 2022 - aim to ensure all new building applications and renovation projects are on-spec for thermal efficiency , energy efficiency and ventilation capability .
Approved Document L and Approved Document F will outline the criteria required for domestic , non-domestic , new-build and renovation project buildings . Part L focuses on the energy efficiency levels and the thermal performance of the building , set to reduce the impact on fuel usage , whilst Part F focuses on the ventilation performance , which can
be as simple as how many windows can open within a property , to minimising the ingress of external pollutants and the proper installation of ventilation systems .
REAL Aluminium has produced an easy-to-read guide on glazing specification choices to meet the updated building regulations , for a range of purposes including :
• Replacement on existing dwellings or extensions
• New extensions
• New build U Values with double glazing used
• New build U Values with triple glazing usedw
The guide also explains how to meet the notional dwelling target , which allows architects to trade off ‘ U ’ Values against other materials in a dwelling – as long as they are within the limiting ‘ U ’ Values .
Dean Thomas , managing director , REAL Aluminium , comments : “ As a manufacturer of elegant , durable doors and window systems , REAL is committed to meeting building regulations to ensure full compliance . Our aluminium profiles use the very best material and offer exceptional lifetime value for money , but the final chosen glazing can make a significant difference to how the completed products perform .
“ We are on hand to offer guidance and advice to installers to ensure they can deliver a project of the highest technical standards and building regulations without compromising on the quality of the final installed product .”

SOUND EXPANSION TO FURTHER SUPPORT CARL F GROUPCO ’ S CUSTOMERS
Carl F Groupco has further expanded its window vent inventory with the addition of the new Simon Acoustic ventilator range from RW Simon Ltd . The new acoustic vents are designed to assist fabricators and installers in creating aesthetic solutions for all acoustic requirements , while still meeting the latest updates to Part F [ ventilation ] and Part E [ resistance to sound ] of the Building Regulations in England for both new build and refurbishment projects .
Crittenden , Managing Director at Carl F Groupco , said : “ Windows can play a vital part in reducing the level of noise entering the property particularly for homes in high-traffic city areas or properties impacted by air traffic noise or railways . The intelligently designed acoustic vents can be installed to any window system and are available with a PVC-U or aluminium external canopy which can be dual colour matched for improved product aesthetics .
“ The recent changes to Part F [ ventilation ] requires additional ventilation to circulate air in living spaces but in some high-traffic situations , that can increase the chances of introducing outside noise . By fitting the RW Simon acoustic vents , you are compliant with both Part F and Part E requirements .”
As you would expect from an RW Simon product , the new acoustic vents have been tested to the highest standards for exceptional performance compliance .
The vents offer a sound reduction of up to 42dB and have been independently tested in accordance with BE EN ISO 717- 1:1997 [ airborne sound insulation ] and BS EN 20140-10:1992 . They have also met the World Health Organisation [ WHO ] recommended reduction of 33dB , and all models in the range have a minimum equivalent area of 2500mm ².
With five internal options available , the acoustic ventilator range can meet most requirements for new build projects . There is an option to upgrade to an inbuilt humidity control operation with a hygromatic sensor to open and close the vent dependent on the quality of the moisture in the room . An additional acoustic sleeve is also available to further increase the acoustic properties .
Carl F Groupco ’ s extensive range of acoustic and Part F-compliant trickle vents means the company can always provide its customers with the right ventilation solutions to meet market standards .
John concluded : “ The ultimate responsibility falls with the installer to guarantee their installations comply with regulations but we see it as our job to ensure we supply compliant-ready products to assist with these exacting requirements . Our ever-evolving product range , in-house technical support and strong partner relationships ensure our customers can rely on us to carry the compliant product inventory they need .”
