Lamination plant is part of expansion

HL Plastics , the company behind the Liniar brand , has opened its new state-of-the-art foiling and lamination plant as part of ongoing expansion plans .
The division was previously a few miles from the rest of the operation in Somercotes , but a smooth move to the main site at Denby was completed in just eight days , with no loss of production time .
A new WPR machine has also been installed as part of the new set-up to increase the facility ’ s capacity .
The plant is now sited in the former warehouse building at HL ’ s Derbyshire headquarters , which became vacant after the existing operation moved into the new
178,000 ft ² Liniar House building , next to the factory and mixing plant .
HL ’ s managing director Martin Thurley said : “ The new warehouse building allows us to have most of our manufacturing divisions all on one site . This removes the cost of additional transport and man hours spent shunting materials between
the two locations and keeps in line with our philosophy of being efficient and eco-friendly .
“ The layout of the lamination plant has been specifically designed to maximise throughput of our foiled profiles for maximum
efficiency and the additional WPR machine was needed because of growing demand for coloured Liniar products . We ’ ve now dedicated one of the machines for specials .”
Liniar House , incorporating new showrooms for both Liniar and Avantek Machinery , will be officially opened in September .

ALL SYSTEMS GO

Progress in transforming the former City Beads Halo fabricator into part of The Glazerite UK Group has been ‘ massive ,’ say company chiefs . This is despite frustrations over a long overdue high-speed broadband installation . Mark Smith , former managing director of the Peterborough company and now director designate of the new division , Glazerite East , explained : “ Everything had been paper-based for the 32 years of our existence . Only when that changed could we really begin to move forward .”
During the wait for highspeed broadband , Glazerite upgraded machinery and spent over £ 125,000 on new quad and crucifix welders from Winmac . Another £ 50,000 went on bringing IT in line with existing Glazerite systems and more was spent on signage , vehicle livery and new windows and doors to bring the site into line with the new group brand .
Group director Jason Thompson said the lack of broadband strength and delay was a major setback . However , best use was made of the time such as introducing the Glazerite culture to the workforce .
He said : “ We have been able to improve working conditions and terms of employment . The other side of the equation is of course the existing customer base and , even before the IT issue was solved , the feedback from them was very encouraging and has gone on getting better .”
Now , just as at Glazerite ’ s other production sites , everything is bar-coded across the whole of production and dispatch so there is full transparency and accountability throughout . Lead times have been brought down in line with the rest of the group , and full online quoting and ordering is available to all customers .

Ten-year partnership

Belfast ’ s UCS Design Group is celebrating ten years of partnership with Spectus Systems .
UCS ’ s managing director Mark Scullion was presented with an award to mark the anniversary at the FIT Show by Epwin Windows Systems ’ managing director Clare O ’ Hara and sales director Paul Lindsay .
When asked what made the partnership so enduring , Mark highlighted two factors .
“ The first is the quality and integrity of the Spectus brand and product range . The Spectus name is trusted by our customers and the products sell themselves ,”
he said . “ The second factor is the quality of the backup and marketing support offered by the systems house .”
Established over ten years ago , UCS operates from a 25,000 sq ft factory with a conservatory village , showroom and trade counter on a three-acre site in Belfast . It also has a depot and showroom in Dublin .
The company ’ s core business was originally conservatories , but it soon found that the Spectus brand offered more for its customers . Spectus has now become its flagship product , accounting for 80 % of the business .
