2024 HOMEOWNER TRENDS

Ben Brocklesby , Director at Origin , the UK ’ s leading manufacturer of aluminium windows and doors , discusses homeowner priorities for the new year , revealing how glazing professionals can use these insights to succeed in 2024 .
2024 is set to be an interesting year for the fenestration industry .
Following a year of turbulent house prices , economic uncertainty , and families tightening their belts , we predict that home renovations will remain a top priority for homeowners looking to ‘ improve not move ’. We believe homeowners will look to improve their house which will better suit their needs for now and in the future . For us , this creates an opportunity as those in the industry can help homeowners realise their dreams .
The Renovation Boom
We anticipate that the ‘ don ’ t move , improve ’ mindset is here to stay in the UK , with London predicted to lead the way . In 2023 , London accounted for 14 % of all granted planning applications nationwide , making it the central hub for renovations . Surrey and Greater Manchester followed closely behind at 4 % each , cementing their status as significant renovation hotspots .
Although London dominates the rankings , it ’ s important to note that it has one of the lowest application success rates in the country at 81 %. Instead , fenestration companies and installers may see a greater demand for planned projects in Hampshire
, which boasts an impressive 95 % approval rate , or Gloucestershire , where 93 % of plans receive the green light .
Value is Trending
Homeowners ’ perception of what value looks like is ever-changing . In 2024 , we predict that the focus will be on longevity and quality as they look to live more sustainably and make more conscious buying decisions .
Sustainable materials that ensure longevity will need to go hand in hand with products that provide aesthetic appeal . When investing in windows and doors , homeowners are actively looking for alternatives to plastic . Google searches for ‘ aluminium doors ’ have been steadily growing over the past five years , whilst searches for ‘ uPVC doors ’ have seen a decline .
Natural Light
A lack of natural light in a home can have a significant impact on mental and physical health . Having lots of natural light in a property has been proven to improve mood , stabilise circadian rhythms , and increase cognitive performance .
Research by Origin reveals that homeowners are three times more likely to perceive their home as bad for their wellbeing
if it lacks natural light . To maximise natural light in the home , Origin ’ s Home Range uses high-grade aluminium to achieve ultra-slim sightlines which will let in as much natural light as possible .
In 2023 , we saw the resurgence of broken-plan over open-plan living and we don ’ t expect to see this disappear anytime soon . Homeowners are still seeking to create separate zones for living , working , and entertaining , as modern lifestyles continue to evolve in the post-pandemic era . The Origin OI-30 Internal Door is the ideal way to achieve this . Made bespoke and available in over 150 RAL colours , the
sleek , on trend , steel-look Origin Internal Door provides an elegant way to divide living spaces while allowing light to flow from room to room .
Thermal Efficiency
With growing concerns surrounding energy bills and expected changes in building regulations under the Future Homes Standard ( 2025 ), the importance of thermal efficiency has become a top priority for homeowners as they look to make their properties more thermally efficient as a long-term way to reduce household bills .
Windows are an effective way to do this . The Origin Premium Window ( OW-80 ) offers an optional upgrade of Aerogel technology – the world ’ s best insulator , originally used in spacesuits . When used within the thermal break of the OW-80 , it can achieve an ultra-low U-Value of 0.8 W / m 2 K .
A Positive Outlook
Whilst we ’ re still settling into 2024 , we are confident that people will continue to invest in their homes . As the market starts to settle and recover , homeowners are taking stock of their priorities . The key to success is to meet , and exceed , homeowner demands . By identifying their requirements and collaborating with trusted suppliers that meet those standards , installers can develop their business and enhance their reputation for exceptional growth this year .
