‘ WE ’ RE NOT PREPARED TO ALLOW OUR CUSTOMERS TO BE OUR QUALITY CONTROL ’

What goes into making integral blind units that not only look superb , but work beautifully over many years in-situ ? Ian Short , MD of Uni-Blinds ® manufacturer Morley Glass , explains .
It can be easy to assume there isn ’ t really much difference between one integral blind unit and another . But did you know that every one of the Uni-Blinds ® units that we manufacture at our Leeds factory is bespoke-made by skilled operatives using the world ’ s leading systems and components ?
As with every product we buy , whether that ’ s in our working environment or in our personal lives , there is almost always a noticeable difference between brands in terms of quality . You wouldn ’ t , for example , expect to get the same experience driving a Fiat as you would in a BMW . And the principle is no different for integral blinds .
One of the driving forces behind our business since day one has been a commitment to using only ScreenLine ® integral blind systems in everything we make . These are the world ’ s number one integral blind systems from
Italian company Pellini S . p . A , who actually pioneered this type of blind in the window and door industry in the 1970s .
We believe having ScreenLine ® systems inside our units is akin to having a laptop with ‘ Intel inside ’ – it represents quality that underpins the long term performance and reliability of the system .
Morley Glass was the first company to offer the UK market integral blind units with Screen- Line ® inside in realistic lead times when we began manufacturing in 2004 , and it was evident from the outset that this unlocked significant sales opportunities for installers .
Today we offer a range of manual and motorised Venetian and pleated integral blinds sold under our Uni-Blinds ® brand . These include the SV sliding Venetian system , which uses a cordless magnetic slider to raise , lower and tilt the slats , the smart home compatible MB motorised
integral blind and a recently launched pleated blackout blind for flat glass rooflights .
What does ‘ quality ’ look like ?
One example of how Pellini ensures ScreenLine ® products achieve such high quality standards is the colour finishes applied to its Venetian blind slats . Over the past 12 months we have launched several new contemporary Venetian integral blind colours , including black , agate grey , slate grey and a dual coloured slat that is white on the inside and anthracite on the exterior – all of which are the result of Pellini ’ s product development programme .
What most people outside the world of integral blind manufacturing probably don ’ t realise is how much work goes into achieving the perfect colour finish that will stand the test of time . The process includes a 3,000-hour accelerated weathering test to simulate conditions at the extreme end of what the blind will experience in-situ .
This is because the colour applied to aluminium slats must be able to withstand extremely high temperatures and strong UV light inside the double glazed unit – it is most definitely not a case of coating it in any old paint and hoping for the best ! The colour must be precisely formulated and applied in the correct way , then tested and tweaked if necessary over long periods to replicate the conditions over its installed lifespan .
As important as the blind system is , however , it is not the
only thing that contributes to a high quality integral blind unit . We also use superior warm edge spacer bars to manufacture every unit , and we partner with Saint- Gobain Glass to offer customers a range of market-leading glass products that can optimise the thermal performance of the sealed unit and – if required – deliver enhanced solar control .
Optimising our factory for quality and traceability
Our manufacturing processes are designed around quality too . We are continuously investing in state-of-the-art machinery and training for our workforce to allow us to achieve consistent product quality .
But no integral blind unit leaves our factory without thorough quality checks , and every unit is barcoded for easy traceability should any issue arise . This allows us to see who assembled
the unit at various stages of production , exactly which components and systems were used and who checked the unit ’ s finished quality .
We ’ re not prepared to allow our customers to be our quality control . Any end-user complaint or call back is time consuming for installers and has the potential to damage their reputation , and this is why we are so committed to delivering integral blind units that customers can depend on .
As a business we ’ ve worked hard to maximise customer satisfaction , both in terms of the product quality and service we provide , but we know we can never rest on our laurels . Our current 4.6 out of 5.0 rating on Facebook reviews is a good indicator that we are doing things well , but we are always striving to do even better .
