Tim Buckland, owner of Sabie Valley Coffee, and his wife Kim, are your hosts on the Sabie Valley Coffee Tour. The couple have been growing, roasting and making coffee for so long that they have forgotten more about coffee than most of us will ever know, and they are more than happy to share that knowledge and expertise with you. You won’ t be able to stop yourself – an involuntary ooh or aah will escape your lips when you first walk through the doors of the building and smell the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. The first thing you’ ll notice in the entrance hall are the 3 elderly but still working coffee mills – Beatrice, Spong and Lovelock. Then have a good mooch around the displays of coffee paraphernalia and graphic presentations of the coffee process. Then it’ s over to Tim or Kim who’ ll take you through the entire process from bean to cup, along the way telling you about the life of a coffee farmer and how the industry works. Apparently not all beans are created equal. That’ s why there are so many different coffees of various grades available today. When the beans are green, they’ re vulnerable to contamination, and because coffee, you’ ll learn, is thermo-sensitive, its character and flavour can easily be compromised in the roasting process. You’ ll visit the coffee trees, watch Tim or Kim roast a batch of fresh beans and then taste the various roasts, from medium and dark roast to the very popular bushveld roast. End off a perfect afternoon with a special coffee drink, a delicious quiche, burger, salad or sandwich, followed by a slice of decadent cheesecake, melktart( milk tart) or Kim’ s famous chocolate cake.
