HWMHS celebrates NAIDOC week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held
around the country each July to
celebrate the history, culture and
achievements of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander peoples.
The week is celebrated, not just in
Indigenous communities but also in
government agencies, schools, local
councils and community organisations.
“Welcome to Country” was presented by
Tyron Morris. With Tyron is Mr. Thornber
a tutor with the Norta Norta scheme,
closing the gap to keep indigenous
students at school.

Missy Rose helped students to prepare
and cook Johnny Cakes, while sharing
childhood memories of the bush bread
and her grandmother.
Ronald Ward from Wilcannia and Kerrin Parkes from Albury visited the High
School. Kerrin gave a history of the didgeridoo explaining technique and uses.
Ronald demonstrated dance and encouraged students to join in. “We had no
play stations,” said Kerrin, “So dance is for fun.”

NAIDOC week concluded with a disco at the Spirit of
ANZAC centre. Children enjoyed sausage sandwich,
chips and drinks while they had fun with friends at the
end of the second school term.
