Royal Far West Invitation for Annie The Royal Far West Children’s Scheme has been caring for country kids for 90 years next year. The idea for Royal Far West was conceived in 1924 by its founder, Stanley Drummond, Superintendent of the Methodist Far West Mission in NSW, while he was himself convalescing at Manly. Stanley and his wife Lucy, along with tireless volunteers from both the country and city, set up and ran the first of many seaside holiday camps, often providing outback children their first chance to see the sea. Initially, Royal Far West brought children from remote country areas for respite in Manly's seaside environment, but today it provides specialist health services not available in rural areas. It quickly became apparent that many of the camp children required medical attention, signalling the organisation’s evolution from ‘holiday camp’ to ‘health provider’. One of the first children to visit the Royal Far West was 7 year old Annie Parsons. Annie has been invited to Manly to join the 90th year celebrations next year, but is not sure if she will be able to make it. “I’m good for a spring chicken,” says Annie, the eldest resident at Haydays, “but it’s a big trip.” Annie remembers being picked up in the “Drummonds old Ford’ from Booligal and travelling to Manly by train. Children today travel by bus and/or train too. 6993 5117 Visit the Bistro NEWEST PUB Wed - Sun: Lunch 12 - 2pm Wed - Sat: Dinner 6 - 9pm IN THE RIVERINA Book your Party or Function at the Carrathool Family Hotel Christmas, Birthday, Anniversary Party Car Club and other enthusiasts welcome 6 Room budget accommodation on site 30
