As the motion picture and television industry is booming , we ’ re seeing an increase in new workers hitting the ground running .
We ’ ve recently updated our information sheet on New and Young Worker Orientations for the Motion Picture and Television Industry ( Performing Arts is soon to follow ), which we ’ ve included as a pull-out section with this newsletter .
Required by law in British Columbia , our info . sheet is intended to assist with conducting orientations for new and young workers and outlines the regulations , responsibilities of the employer , supervisor and worker plus a checklist with a summary of this important information .

Tips & Tricks For Fighting Fatigue

Everyone experiences fatigue from time to time . Fatigue is described as a state of mental or physical performance impairment . Excessive or cumulative fatigue is known as sleep debt and can have a significant impact on increased sleepiness , decreased performance , and a reduced margin of safety .
These factors can increase vulnerability to incidents and accidents in operational settings , the consequences of which may have both industry , societal and personal impacts .
Six Safety Systems Inc . have produced a list of helpful , concise suggestions on ways to fight fatigue . These Tips & Tricks are designed to help you increase your personal health and safety , improve your family and social life , improve work performance , decrease your risk for injuries and ill health and decrease your risk for errors .
TIPS FOR WHEN YOU MAY FEEL DROWSY AT WORK
• Muscular activity arouses a sleepy mind by increasing circulation , so get active during breaks ; stand up and perform a few simple stretches to put your body back in balance
• Don ’ t eat your meals at your workstation ; go for a walk to increase blood flow to the muscles and more importantly , the brain
• Alternate your posture at work every half-hour , especially if you have a sedentary job
• Take advantage of any fitness equipment onsite
• Engage in conversations to stimulate your brain
• Turn on talk radio or lively music to increase alertness

• Try a cup of peppermint tea ; along with citrus scents like lemon and grapefruit , their strong aromas are stimulating to the brain ; eucalyptus and pine are also invigorating , but avoid lavender , jasmine or chamomile which can act like sedatives
