I walk around Jones Lake, I
practice a “thank-you walk”,
mentally listing all the things
for which I am grateful, and
I’m still not finished after 40
minutes. One thing I learned to
be thankful for is the reduction
in freelance writing contracts,
because it’s given me time to
return to poetry and my harp,
and take on an interesting
editing project, and since I can’t
invite friends to dinner, I’ve
spread out an art project on my
dining-room table.
I hoping to look back on
this pandemic as a period of
personal growth, because if
I’m fortunate enough to avoid
infection, I’ve been given the
luxury of time to reflect on
what’s really important in the
third chapter of my life.
Celtic Trilogy
Part 1, Pilgrimage (2005)
I walk among the Celtic crosses,
searching the resting places of ancestors’ bones –
for Margaret and Jeremiah,
(d. 1918, Spanish ‘flu epidemic),
for Mary and Liam,
Cathleen, John, and Briget.
But I can’t find them,
can’t see them smile in wonder and pity
at me, this lost trans-Atlantic orphan,
not realizing I carry them with me,
in my heart.
