Downsizing: you must be disciplined
by Paul Burns
There comes a time when we
boomers begin to think about
“care free living” in an apartment
or condo. There is even a new trend
becoming popular with young
and old alike: minimalist living.
When downsizing, the most
important thing to remember is
that you actually have to get rid
of things. A four-bedroom house
with a basement and double
garage will not fit into a two-
bedroom apartment or condo. It
just won’t work!
A good approach is to sell, give
away or donate everything you

possible can. Then get rid of
that much more again. Now
you are getting close. Be tough
- remember you are now a
minimalist!
My greatest vice is books. I have
hundreds around the house and
many I haven’t read yet. I’m told
there is a building downtown
called a library where they have
many books and they look after
the storage. I recently renewed
my library card and I’m going
to give it a try.
My wife’s major vice is crafts;
especially scrapbooking and
cross stitch. Also, she has enough
material to restock Fabricville
if they run low. These will be a
couple of our “sticking points”
when we consider moving
in a few years.
The most important thing is to
start before you really need to.
Slowly begin giving your stuff
away to your kids. Sometimes
they don’t want it but this isn’t
about them. Be tough! There are
also charities that accept gently
used clothing, furniture etc. The
SPCA loves to get donations of
old bedding they can use in
their kennels.
You can do this. Remember,
you are now a minimalist.

du but! Ne jetez pas l’éponge;
n’oubliez pas que vous adhérez
à une vision minimaliste
maintenant!
