The Bay of Fundy- A True Natural Wonder of the World
Recognized by geologists as one of the most iconic wonders of the world, it comes as no surprise the Bay of Fundy has become a must-see destination. For those unfamiliar with this amazing body of water and her rugged coastline, let me share some of the natural wonders that make her so special.
Situated between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the Bay of Fundy is a spectacular body of water stretching 270 Kms long and up to 100 Kms wide.
The epitome of ocean tides, the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world coursing up the length of the bay until the water flows in to the far upper reaches in both N. B. and N. S. to the dizzying height of 16 metres. As staggering as this sounds, the difference between low and high tide on these extreme“ Spring Tide” days( nothing to do with the time of the year) is as high as a five storey building! Keep in mind that the average high tides in the world are but one metre.
Equally as impressive is the bay’ s eco-diversity resulting from the flow of 160 billion tons of water in and out twice every 25 hours. Teeming with phytoplankton and krill and such, twelve species of whales( including the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale), countless species of sharks, a rich lobster and scallop fishery, not to mention an influx of a million shorebirds, make for a bay that is brimming with life.
Then there is the geology, including the semi-precious stones that abound along the beaches, rich deposits of fossils such as the oldest known reptiles in the world on the cliffs and beaches at Joggins, N. S. and of course the striking manifestations of the tidal action can be found in the many shapes and contours of the world famous sea

I have hiked and toured almost every nook and cranny on both sides of the bay and my passion for it is ignited every time I draw near. The rugged majesty and different faces it presents, sometimes nuanced and sometimes striking depending on the season, the lighting, the weather and the people make it an“ I must Experience”.
I have barely covered the surface of all the things to see and do in the Bay of Fundy region suffice it to say that you must explore it for yourself. Enjoy the Summer and farewell until the next season approaches.

Les géologues considèrent la baie de Fundy comme l’ une des plus célèbres merveilles du monde; rien d’ étonnant qu’ elle soit une destination incontournable. Je profite de ma chronique pour mettre au parfum ceux et celles qui connaissent peu cette étendue d’ eau extraordinaire et son littéral découpé.
Ce bras de mer spectaculaire, situé entre la Nouvelle Écosse et le Nouveau Brunswick, mesure 270 km de long et, par endroit, jusqu’ à 100 km de large.
Ses vertigineuses marées, les plus hautes du monde, remontent jusque dans les cours d’ eau supérieurs au Nouveau Brunswick
et en Nouvelle Écosse et peuvent atteindre 16 mètres d’ amplitude.
En fait, pendant les marées d’ eau-vive( marées de
Hopewell Rocks grande amplitude survenant aux périodes de pleine lune et de nouvelle lune) l’ eau peut monter l’ équivalent d’ un immeuble de cinq étages! Impressionnant, non? Surtout qu’ ailleurs dans le monde, la marée moyenne n’ atteint qu’ un mètre.

en 25 heures, sa biodiversité est tout aussi étonnante. Y pullulent phytoplancton, krill, 12 espèces de baleine( y compris la baleine franche de l’ Atlantique Nord, une espèce en voie de disparition), plusieurs espèces de requins, homards et pétoncles, sans oublier les millions d’ oiseaux de rivage. La baie de Fundy grouille de vie!
Par ailleurs, la région est riche en fossiles( les falaises et les plages près de Joggins, en Nouvelle Écosse, recèlent les fossiles de reptiles les plus vieux du monde), et de nombreuses pierres fines émaillent ses plages. Et que dire des splendides et célèbres « pots de fleurs » qu’ ont sculptés les marées à Hopewell Cape, au Nouveau Brunswick!
J’ ai fait des randonnées sur les deux côtés de la Baie et exploré tous ses coins et recoins. Pourtant, ma passion pour elle ne se dément pas. Sa splendeur majestueuse, ses multiples visages – tantôt subtils tantôt frappants selon la saison –, la lumière qui baigne son terrain, le temps et les riverains, tous ces atouts en font une expérience à ne pas manquer.
Je n’ ai donné qu’ un aperçu de ce qu’ offre la baie de Fundy. Il va sans dire que pour l’ apprécier, il faut l’ explorer soi-même. Je vous souhaite de
passer un bel été. On se parle à l’ automne.
Following Hopewell Rocks, Cape Enrage and Fundy National Park here are my 10 favourite places to visit around the Bay of Fundy.
1. Fundy Trail Parkway, do yourself a favor and visit the spectacular scenery on this amazing highway.
2. St Andrews N. B. a resort town with much to do and see.
3. Grand Manan Island a thrilling ferry ride, a birder’ s paradise, whale watching and much more.
4. Brier Island in N. S. represents the nautical beginning of the Bay of Fundy and so much fun just getting there.
5. Annapolis Royal N. S. the word quaint does not do it justice and simply dripping with history.
6. Grand Pre and Wolfville in N. S. history of the Acadians, Acadia University and near Cape Blomidon Provincial Park which is on the Cobequid Bay.
7. Burntcoat Head the home of the highest recorded tides in the world.
8. Parrsboro N. S. with its geological museum high tides and great little theatre.
9. Advocate Harbour, Cape Chignecto Provincial Park and Cap D’ Or, some of the best hiking in N. S. and home to one of the best restaurants you will ever visit by the name of the Wild Caraway.
10. Johnson’ s Mills at any time but for a real treat visit in early to late August two hours before and after high tide to see 10’ s of thousands of sandpipers doing their thing.

1. Le sentier Fundy, N.-B.:... admirer le paysage spectaculaire le long de cette magnifique route.
2. St. Andrews, N.-B.:... superbe village touristique!
3. L’ île Grand Manan, N.-B.: Après une traversée palpitante, vous avez le choix d’ une panoplie d’ activités – observation d’ oiseaux et de baleines, etc.
4. L’ île Brier, N.-É.... la porte d’ entrée sur la baie de Fundy. 5. Annapolis Royal, N.-É.:... ville riche en histoire.
6. Grand Pré et Wolfville, N.-É.: La région est intimement liée à l’ histoire des Acadiens.... de nombreux points d’ intérêt, dont l’ Université Acadia et le parc provincial de Blomidon, en bordure de la baie Cobequid.
7. Burntcoat Head, N.-É.: Vous resterez bouche bée en voyant les marées les plus hautes du monde.
8. Parrsboro, N.-É.: Ne manquez pas le musée géologique, les marées et un petit bijou de théâtre.
9. Advocate Harbour, le parc provincial Cape Chignecto et le cap d’ Or en N.-É.:... le paradis des randonneurs et le superbe restaurant le Wild Caraway en vaut le détour.
10. Johnson’ s Mills, N.-B.:... préférable d’ y aller au mois d’ août, deux heures avant ou après la marée haute;... des dizaines de milliers de bécasseaux donnent tout un spectacle.
