Senior Financial Abuse –Taking Action!
The Financial and Consumer Services Commission (FCNB) is working to safeguard New
Brunswick’s seniors and vulnerable adults from financial abuse.
Fears of age discrimination and loss of
empowerment can keep seniors from speaking
up when they are being abused. This can lead to
social isolation, depression, anxiety and other
negative side effects.
FCNB released a report in June with
recommendations following extensive research
and consultations across the province. The
recommendations are a step toward preventing
financial abuse of seniors from occurring in the
first place, and include:
• Legislative changes around the definition of
financial abuse and protections for those who
report it.

• Support for industry professionals who suspect
clients may be victims of abuse.
• Educational initiatives to raise awareness of
financial abuse and how to deal with it.
• Promotion of inter-agency cooperation to
combat the financial abuse of seniors and other
vulnerable people.
FCNB is committed to working to protect our
seniors and encourages New Brunswickers to
report suspected financial abuse.
