Scheduled for December 2 at Expo New Mexico, Hispanic Arts Building, the event brings out creative talent for a very good cause, said Shauna Frost, executive director of Meals on Wheels. “You’re not only building and buying houses for fun, you’re also helping to support our low income meal program that supplies more than 500 meals a day to our most vulnerable people, seniors and those who cannot make meals for themselves,” she said. “Our event allows people to build houses individually or as a group, and for those who don’t feel like building a house, they can purchase one at the event. All proceeds go to benefit our programs and services.” Since Meals on Wheels of Albuquerque started in 1972, the program has grown out of both necessity and the community’s willingness to expand, said Frost. In 1972, Meals on Wheels had 20 clients. Today the program delivers more than 100,000 meals annually to hundreds of clients. “Our services enable those unable to prepare their own meals to have a hot, healthy, well- balanced meal delivered to their door Monday through Friday,” Frost said. “Often thought of as only serving the elderly, Meals on Wheels serves anyone of any age who needs us. Some of our clients are recovering from surgery and only need our services for a few weeks.” Frost says one of their clients, Lorraine, is 104 years old and still lives independently. She has been receiving meals from the program for seven years. “Not only do we deliver much needed nutrition but we also deliver a friendly smile to our clients’ door,” she said. “Our wonderful army of volunteers delivering meals each day grows to know and care for those they meet on their routes. Our clients know that someone each day is checking on them to make sure that their dietary needs are being and N e w Ho m e s wned Pre-o vailable A PRIME TIME met and they are safe and healthy and not in medical distress.” Frost said entries to Gingerbread Enchantment each year come from church groups, fraternal organizations, (continued on next page) F S P E A LL CIA LS Welcome to Albuquerque Meadows You have discovered the best in independent, carefree, senior (55+) community living.
