improve. But the believers far outnumbered the skeptics. Wearied by all the attention, in August Schlatter returned by train to Denver at the invitation of a former city official there who had been impressed by what he had witnessed in Albuquerque. He rested in Denver for two weeks before resuming his ministry, attracting even larger crowds than before. After three months he disappeared, leaving a note that said simply,“ My mission is finished. Father takes me away. Goodbye.”
Mounted on a large white horse named Butte, a gift from one of his followers, he rode south, keeping to the back roads and avoiding large towns. In December he appeared at the Morley Ranch near Datil, N. M., where he spent the winter in seclusion, seeking, as he told his hosts,“ to restore my spiritual powers.” In the spring he resumed his southward journey and was last seen approaching the Mexican border.

Madre in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, when his guide pointed to a pine tree and told him a story. Years ago, he said, when he was a boy, he had discovered a dead man wrapped in a blanket lying under that very tree. He was a gringo, tall, with long hair and a beard. His big white horse was grazing nearby. The boy ran back to town and told the authorities what he had found. No one knew who the man was, but it appeared he had died of natural causes, so they buried him there under the tree and brought the horse and his other possessions back to town for safekeeping, in case anyone should come looking for him.
Hewett’ s interest was piqued. Something about this story rang a bell in his memory, so he investigated further. The man’ s things were still there. They included a Bible with the name Francis Schlatter written on the flyleaf and a leather sheath containing a copper rod about the size of a baseball bat. The authorities later presented the rod to Hewett, and it now resides in the collections of the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe.
