Joel Jacobsen:
From The
Law To The
Livelier Side
Of The Law
told a friend of mine that I
always wished I had taken the
law school entrance exam,
and he suggested I read a book
by Albuquerque attorney, Joel
Jacobsen. The book, For the Sake
of Argument: A Life in the Law, is
a book of advice for law students,
young lawyers and anyone
contemplating a legal career.
The book is written in
Jacobsen’s personal style, and
with his expertise as he has
already undertaken the journey,
has passed the tests, gone to law
school, lawyered as a career and
is currently an assistant district
attorney in New Mexico.
Turns out Jacobsen has written
another book that is quite
different than his “legal memoir,”
and more like a history lesson
of one of New Mexico’s most
famous Wild West true stories.
That book, Such Men as Billy the
Kid: The Lincoln County War
Reconsidered, which he explains,
“The Old West wasn’t lawless,
as the cliché would have it. If
anything, there was an excess
of law, or at least an excess of
lawyers and judges and writs and
counter-writs. And gunfire.”
On his personal website,
Jacobsen, said his first book was
intended to present everything he
knew about the law that he h ad
wished he had known when he
was making his career decisions.
“My hope was to save my
readers from some of the
mistakes I made,” he writes on
his blog. “Most of the advice
comes in the form of anecdotes
and jokes, which some people
enjoy and others (I’ve discovered)
find just a little too close to the
bone. Among the latter, sadly, is
my publisher, Kaplan, the test-
prep people, who commissioned
the book, paid me handsomely
up front, and then declined to
promote it, apparently in the
belief that it might discourage
applicants for their LSAT and bar
exam courses.”
But Jacobsen does present
serious strategies for those
considering the law business,
the most basic and important, he
states is taking a test prep course,
whether Kaplan’s or somebody
else’s in order to get “test saavy.”
I found his advice saavy, as well,
and perhaps my pipe dream of
taking the LSAT may be part of
future plans because of this book.
Jacobsen graduated in January,
1986, from Northwestern
University in Chicago, then at the
University of New Mexico and,
on a Fulbright Scholarship, the
Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-
Universität in Bonn, Germany.
Jacobsen’s books can be
found and ordered from local
independent booksellers or from
Amazon, Barnes & Noble or
Tower.com.
