One of the students ’ favorites is an edible Roman temple building project that they get to eat at the end of class . This gingerbread house style project could not be done this year since it involves food and group work so this year we had a column building contest in which each student had to build a model of each of the 3 types of columns using only 3 index cards , 2 sheets of paper , scissors , clear tape , and a glue stick . In some cases , I have liked the new ways better and will probably still do them after the pandemic is over .

An example of this was our house project . In the past , the 6th-grade students worked in groups to draw the floorplan of a Roman house and then label the rooms in Latin and demonstrate their knowledge of the rooms ’ uses by furnishing the rooms with magazine pictures imagining that their family moved in today . This year I gave each student a 12x18 printed floorplan to label and furnish .
The silver lining to the pandemic has been finding new and sometimes better ways to teach students .
