ELE Module Update

The Exploratory Latin Exam Committee has updated its syllabus in recent years to more accurately reflect modern pedagogy and meet the needs of Latin teachers . The syllabus has been divided into two parts : the Universal Set and the Extended Set . With this new syllabus , the Committee was able to create a system of sheltered vocabulary , allowing students in grades four and below to focus on a smaller set of words . Beginning in grade five , students are presented with more of a challenge by utilizing the Extended Set vocabulary .
Since the syllabus update , the Resources Coordinator has been collecting activities and stories that can help students prepare for the Exploratory Latin Exam . The Exploratory Latin Universal Teaching Module is an activity module of teacher-designed materials to help prepare students for the national Exploratory Latin Exam ( ELE ). The original activity module was compiled in 2004 and required updated materials to better serve students and educators . Using the ELE Syllabus as its framework , the updated module provides a variety of activities designed to address the different age groups and learning styles of the students enrolled in exploratory Latin classes and help them learn Latin vocabulary and grammar .
Although the module mirrors the ELE syllabus in its alphabetical arrangement , it is not intended to be used in such a sequence . Each section includes some stand-alone activities that only use vocabulary from that section , however they also contain some activities that integrate vocabulary from other sections .
The design of the module allows teachers to determine the order and method of presentation . Within each section of the module there may be readings , explanations , songs , games , or worksheets focused on a section of vocabulary .
The update includes 15 simple Latin stories and 3 story booklets for students to read . There are 36 new activities , 3 new games , and 3 sets of slideshows for teachers to use in the classroom .
The Resource Coordinator would like to give special thanks to Susan Senechal , Kris Tracy and Marie Davis for their efforts in creating the original module , and a huge thanks needs to be given to Micheal Posey and Kris Tracy for editing the current updated module .
As you start to dive into learning about Latin and the Romans with these new resources , please feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions at resources @ etclassics . org . We also love seeing student work ! We are beginning to collect materials for the Extended Set of Vocabulary update . Please share any work that might be included in that
update !
