1. The Kitchen Lady
Remembering what had happened the last time she had
involved Sarah in her family problems, Polly was
reluctant to do so again. “I’m really sorry, but no!” She
gripped the telephone tightly, to emphasise how
determined she was, “Sarah deserves a rest, and
anyway, she never goes looking for ghosts – enough of
them come back to bother her anyway, without her
giving them any encouragement.” Polly flatly refused to
ask any favours, even for her son-in-law.
Gavin was upset, of course. He protested, “But I’ve
known Dave for years, dammit – we were at school
together. His son’s new house is haunted, and he’s really
scared...” He paused when Polly interrupted his flow, and
then replied, offended, “Of course I haven’t told him
about ‘Psychic Sarah’ – I promised not to gossip about
her, and I never have.”
“Really, Gavin, there’s no need to be disrespectful,”
said Polly. “You have to understand that Sarah is not as
young as she was and has acceded to very few requests
since all the trauma when Clarrie was attacked.”
“She must be well over that by now, and…”
“…And,” Polly interjected firmly, “there are dozens
of mediums advertising their skills, who would welcome
the publicity if they rid the house of ghosts. On the other
