man would give Clarrie no peace until she did.
It transpired that for the previous twenty months,
Rowena had suspected Brian of being unfaithful but
hadn’t wanted to accept that he could be so despicably
cunning. His birthday cards to her still expressed his
undying love for her and she’d wanted to believe it.
Sarah often encountered such obstinacy. Loved
ones who had passed on, still worried about the living
and could not be ignored. Clarrie had assumed she knew
everything about Rowena’s family, her teenage qualms,
early marriage and her first son, born a year later, but
had no idea who the man could be. However, she’d found
out when Rowena delivered some shopping for her.
Over a cup of tea, Rowena was also perplexed until
Clarrie delivered his message. “Tell her she must go to
Brian at once, to save him from himself,” the old man
pleaded.
“Did you say he was old, short and quite rotund?”
Rowena asked, at first looking puzzled. Then she
laughed: “Brian’s grandfather, without a doubt. Next time
you see him, ask him why I should give up my hopes and
dreams for the future, to stick around and mother his
worthless grandson!”
It was obvious to Clarrie that, by then, Rowena was
quite sure about Brian’s infidelity. Now, a couple of years
later, she was still in the middle of her unsettled divorce
and was currently back in England, staying with an aunt,
until her divorce went through and she could return to
France.
Rowena’s marriage had been fine for nearly thirty
years – or so she’d believed. They had been disappointed
