“Oh, of course,” Clarrie recalled, “Elaine’s baby is due
soon ...you must be excited! I hope she is well. You’re not
going because there’s anything wrong are you?”
Polly assured her that Elaine was fine. She was going
on a whim: for a change of air! What she failed to say was
that, depending on what she learned by telephone, she
might even pay Elaine’s Aunt Margaret a visit. Perhaps,
with luck, she could deal with the problem herself, without
being a nuisance to her friends.
