his interests didn’t widen much beyond science.
Whenever the subject of girls came up, his father urged
him to distrust pretty faces and look for more lasting
virtues in a wife... “When the time is right, Jay,” he’d add,
as if hoping it never would be! If only he had taken the
advice to heart, the ensuing tragedy might have been
averted; he and his father would not have been so cruelly
torn apart.
Throughout her teens and early twenties Amy enjoyed
life and was not interested in settling down until she met
John. The handsome young scientist impressed her. He
was brilliant – his future place in the scientific world
already assured, even if only because his father headed
government research projects ...secret stuff of course! She
knew that much and the thought thrilled her. She was
proud to be seen with him, and eager to share what she
was convinced would be his distinguished future. The
only thing she disliked about him was his wearing glasses
so, to please her, unless he was reading, John seldom wore
them when they were out together. He had consequently
not been wearing them on the evening the accident
happened, just before the y were married. Had his father
recovered there might not have been a wedding because
until then John had not realised the intensity of his
father’s feelings.
Knowing his parents would disapprove of Amy, who
was everything his father hated and had him warned
against, how could he even take her home, let alone
introduce her as his future wife? Had she been a teenager
he might have taken the risk, but Amy was a sophisticated
older woman! Both his parents would have thought her
unsuitable for their quiet, serious-minded son. Amy had
always been so understanding about delaying the
confrontation with his family that he was startled to see
her standing in the drive that night as he opened the door.
