Great Minds
When the coronavirus hit the U . S ., hospitals needed help . Canaan Maffeo , a graduate student in JU ' s Nurse Practitioner program , dropped everything and went to the front line - New York City . During yet another 12-hour day caring for some of the hospital ’ s most critically ill patients , Canaan realized that , if he was still on campus at JU , he would have been walking across the commencement stage that very afternoon . He mentioned that to his co-workers , and a spontaneous graduation ceremony broke out .
Biochemists , nurses , data analysts , speech language pathologists , IT experts - our best and brightest minds came together with one mission : figure out how to teach , house , and feed students on campus safely and effectively . With expert guidance from our Mayo Clinic partners and the Centers for Disease Control , the University ’ s coronavirus task force scrutinized every detail of campus life . Months worth of reimagining , reworking , and redrawing our roadmap . Our 11:1 student-teacher ratio worked in our favor . It meant more than 90 percent of fall courses could offer some form of in-person learning safely . With the right precautions and a personal commitment from every member of the campus community , our University proved we could bring students back safely and continue to offer an intimate , nurturing campus experience where they could thrive .
