iAssess: Redefining Cl

A
ssessing student learning can take many forms—diagnostic, formative, authentic,
summative. It can also be tedious and time-consuming. But it is an essential component of
the learning process and must be integrated regularly in the classroom. In an effort to help you
find new and exciting ways to integrate the iPad in your curriculum as an effective assessment
tool, we would like to review a few that may fit exceptionally well in your digital tool box—
Socrative, Easy Assessment, and GoClass.
S
ocrative is a wonderfully effective student response system app
that can work with any web-enabled device. As stated on the
Socrative website, it “empowers the teacher to engage their
classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games,”
allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their understanding
with results immediately available for the teacher. Quizzes and other
assessment activities can be created and stored ahead of time, or can
be put together on the fly during a lesson. These activities can include multiple choice, true/
false, and short answer questions—allowing students to interact with the content in real-time.
Reports documenting student results can be viewed online or emailed as a spreadsheet for
analysis of student outcomes. In addition to using this app as a digital quiz or a means to
check for understanding in the moment, it is also a useful tool for review and is a quick and
easy “exit ticket” activity. This free web-based app is easy to set up and can be used online or
on a mobile device. Socrative is an app that helps you to truly engage your class in a
meaningful way, as well as provide you with an easy and effective way to assess student
learning.
