Speech Therapy Home Practice
Reflect on your communication goals. The following are general examples of speech therapy exercises commonly prescribed for home programs:
Imagine a tennis net across the room— project your voice forward, up and over the net.
• Say“ May-Me-My-Moo” three times
• Say and hold“ Ah” for five seconds at a time, three times
• Say“ Ah” and change your pitch up and down( low to high) three times
• Count one to ten three times
• Say the days of the week three times
• Make up five phrases that are important to you( e. g.,“ I love you”;“ I am hungry”;“ Can you please help me?”) and say each phrase three times
General communication tips:
• Eliminate background noise when communicating
• Use shorter sentences, yes / no and non-verbal gestures( e. g., thumbs up) to reduce vocal fatigue
• Face the person with whom you are speaking
• Have more important conversations during the time( s) of day when you have more energy
For the listener:
• Do not try to finish the person’ s sentence or guess what they are trying to say unless that is their preference
• Ask“ Did you say...?” to confirm that you heard and understood the person correctly
• Practice patience
