PREPARING FOR LABOR AND DELIVERY
How to Prepare for Delivery
We do not shave the pubic hair prior to delivery . If you require a scheduled C-section , you will be provided a special soap to shower with prior to being admitted . Please DO NOT shave your abdomen – this is very important in reducing the risk of infection at your C-section incision .
We do not give enemas prior to delivery . If you would feel more comfortable , an enema can be given in early labor to relieve constipation , but please consult with your provider first .
Sometimes a urinary catheter may be inserted in your bladder if you have had an epidural anesthesia or before a planned C-section . Some pregnancy complications will require placement of a urinary catheter .

UAB offers more personalized labor thanks to Spinning Babies ® staff training
Every expectant mother has an idea of how they would like their birth experience to unfold , including preparation , pain management , comfort items , and who will be present . As much as possible , UAB Women & Infants Services supports moms ’ choices , approaching pregnancy as a partnership between patients and care providers .
Spinning Babies ® is a series of exercises designed to help a fetus find the optimal position in the womb . Created by Minneapolis midwife Gail Tully , Spinning Babies ® is a program that encourages the baby to rotate into – and stay in – the head-down position , leading to an easier and less complicated birth . Many of our nurses are specially trained in these techniques to help moms-to-be find the best body positions for their babies ’ movements , using gravity and physiology to help women push more effectively .
Spinning Babies ® techniques are ideal for low-risk pregnancy and delivery , but it is important to note that the techniques are not a replacement to anything but rather are meant to enhance the birthing experience by giving the mother the opportunity to guide the birthing process and coach her baby through delivery . Moms don ’ t need any prior training , and the instructions are easy to follow in real time , and the nurses use visual cards to help visually communicate each position to mom .
The mother ’ s pain management choices or changes do not affect the ability to use these techniques , and nurses can work around wired or wireless fetal monitoring devices as needed .
Birthing aids such as balls and peanuts are welcome and may help with some positions . The sequence of positions used will be unique to each birth , and moms can choose to be actively or passively involved , timing their pushes with the techniques . uabmedicine . org 19
